The Spiritual Nature of "Spirited Away"

The Movie "Spirited Away" portrays a lot of Shinto beliefs.  To start off, the spirits present in the world Sen arrives to exemplify the Shinto beliefs of the way of “kami”.  Also the step of purification is shown when No-Face was saved out of greed by the help of Sen and when the Sen pulled out the garbage inside the river spirit.
I believe Sen had to go on this trip in order to change her mindset about her life and the world.  In the beginning of the movie, Sen was an immature kid who was complaining about every single thing.  She was unpleased about how she was moving and all the actions her parents were doing.  But by the end of the movie, she learns she should follow the way her life flows and always be positive about it.  Also, she learns to be grateful about her surroundings (such as nature, parents, etc.)  At the end of the movie, (unlike the beginning), “Chihiro” talks about how she will be able to be fit into her new surroundings.  She has definitely changed and matured.

  1. Daniel,
Excellent blog posts. Spirited Away was a little "prescriptive" with little new insight, but the Gandhi post was excellent. Your final project was good as a group, but I was hoping for more "recreation" of the project into your own understandings. By the way, excellent contributions in class!
